Frequently Asked Questions
A bedroom set includes multiple coordinated pieces, usually a bed, nightstands, and a dresser or chest. Some sets also feature mirrors, benches, or additional storage pieces. Two-piece sets include a bed and a nightstand. Three-piece sets include a bed with two nightstands or one nightstand and one dresser. Four-piece sets typically come with a bed, a nightstand, a dresser, and a mirror. Five-piece sets add a chest to the combination, and six-piece sets are the most inclusive available. At Carefree Home Furnishings, we carry bedroom collections across all of these configurations — browse by piece count to find the right fit for your space.
A simple rule: if the room is rectangular and roughly standard-sized, a set is faster, cleaner, and usually a better value. If the room is unusual, or you already own pieces you want to keep, build the room piece by piece. Choosing a set can simplify the design process since all the furniture is already matched in style, finish, and scale. For most buyers furnishing a primary or guest bedroom from scratch, a complete collection offers the strongest combination of value and visual coherence.
A smaller bedroom will feel cramped with too many large pieces, so a basic set may be ideal. If you have a larger room, an expanded set with many pieces might be the right choice. Use this rough guide: an 8×10 room suits a full or queen bed with 1-2 compact nightstands and one narrow dresser; a 10×12 room accommodates a queen, standard dresser, and 2 nightstands comfortably; a 12×14 and larger room has room for a king or queen, a dresser and chest, 2 nightstands, and potentially a bench or vanity. Always measure before buying.
Twin (38″ × 75″) suits kids’ rooms, small guest rooms, and bunk beds. Full (54″ × 75″) works for older kids, single adults, and guest rooms. Queen (60″ × 80″) is the most common adult size and fits most bedrooms comfortably for couples. King (76″ × 80″) provides maximum sleep space but needs a larger bedroom. California King (72″ × 84″) is longer than a king and narrower — ideal for tall sleepers. Most bedroom collections at Carefree Home Furnishings are available in multiple bed sizes so you can choose the right fit for your room.
Solid hardwood — oak, maple, cherry, mahogany — is the longest-lasting and the most expensive. Drawers stay tight, finishes age well, and the piece can be refinished decades later. Hardwood veneers over engineered wood cores are the modern compromise — the visible surfaces are real wood, the structural cores are stable engineered material. Most mid-range and upper-mid-range bedroom furniture is built this way. All-engineered wood with paper or vinyl finish is the budget tier — functional for a few years, but it doesn’t age well and cannot be refinished.
Drawer construction tells you a lot about quality. Look for dovetail joints — visible interlocking shapes at the corners — and full-extension drawer glides, which allow the drawer to pull all the way out. Also check that the case doesn’t rack or wobble when a drawer is pulled, that doors hang evenly and close cleanly, and that the finish shows consistent colour and grain without bubbling or peeling. Solid wood furniture tends to be more durable than particleboard or MDF.
Bedroom furniture sees less abuse than living room furniture, but it’s also expected to last longer — most people keep their bedroom set for fifteen to twenty years, not five to ten. Quality construction in solid wood or hardwood veneer over an engineered core will hold its finish and structural integrity throughout that period, while budget all-engineered pieces typically degrade in 3-5 years of daily use. Investing in quality once is almost always the better long-term value.
Though most bedroom sets do not include a mattress, you still want to bear in mind what bed size you want — particularly if your room is on the smaller side. The bedroom collections at Carefree Home Furnishings include the furniture pieces only. You will need to purchase your mattress separately — we recommend choosing your mattress before or alongside your bed frame to ensure the size and support system are compatible with your frame selection.
Depending on your preferences, you can find bedroom sets in a wide range of designs — the most common are contemporary/modern, traditional, casual/transitional, and mid-century modern. At Carefree Home Furnishings, our bedroom collections also include rustic, farmhouse, glam, coastal, and industrial aesthetics. Choose a style that complements your existing flooring, wall colour, and window treatments — or let the bedroom collection anchor a complete room redesign.
Beyond the mattress dimensions, plan for headboard depth of 4-8 inches, footboard width if your bed has one, and at least 24-30 inches of walking space on each side of the bed. Thoroughly measure your room, including door widths and window heights. The window height is an important measurement because it will affect the placement of your bedroom furniture — furniture should only be placed under a window if it won’t overlap with the windowsill.
